Huracán: In Wilma’s Shadow
Hurricane Wilma came in full force and refused to leave Cancún. It was 2005, and Katrina had just decimated New Orleans a few months before. These images are remnants, traces of what’s left behind by the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin, and among the most destructive. Photographing the subtle evidence of destruction allowed me to cope, while being witness to such catastrophe. Knowing I would not be able to stay there much longer after the disaster, I chose to approach its documentation from a personal point of view. While respecting people’s grief and struggle, I put the camera down and helped where I could.
